Deacons

What is a Deacon?

A Deacon is an officer of the church who is sympathetic to the needs of others and whose service is based on the example of Jesus Christ. Deacons minister to those who are sick, those who are in need, and to any who are distressed. Deacons are organized as a board. They meet once a month to report on the deacons’ activities and discuss new needs within the church.

DEACON JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Visitation Deacon

Minister by visiting members who are in the hospital, in other health-care facilities, those homebound, those ill at home, or in crisis. An important part of this visit is to pray with the person who is in need and continue praying for all members entrusted to their care.

Home Bound Communion Deacon

Their ministry is to those who are homebound providing companionship and wish to receive communion at their home or assisted living home. Communion is offered on the same Sunday or that week as our church service by deacons who offer the Sacraments of bread and juice.

Meals and Baby Blanket Deacon

These are deacons who provide timely meal assistance to those in need of support during difficult or stressful times. (such as illness, new moms, after surgery, or suddenly alone spouses). To those new moms a gift of a blanket for baby made with loving hands.

New Member Deacon

This ministry is to respond to questions and support new members in their journey to connect with others in the congregation and life of our church.  A resource for finding out how to get to know others by exploring small group interests or other ways of involvement with our church community.

Memorial Reception Deacon

Deacons assist at each memorial service at Bidwell Presbyterian to Welcome the grieving family and guests, and assist with the guest book. Coordinate receptions after memorial services and provide a comforting environment to mourning family and friends.

Stephen Ministry Deacon

Our Stephen Ministry Leader coordinates all Stephen ministers with their care receivers. The Stephen Ministry is a confidential, lay-caring ministry grounded in Jesus’ command to love one another. Those who are hurting receive love and support through one-to-one caring relationships. The ministry is named after Stephen, one of the first deacons in the early Christian church, commissioned by the apostles to care for the needs of people in the Christian community.
